Case Study

A concerned member whose daughter was visiting Nepal contacted our Crisis Response Management Centre after hearing reports of violent unrest in Nepal and clashes between pro-democracy protesters and police in Kathmandu during a nationwide strike in April 2006.

Although his daughter was planning to leave Nepal the following day, the member was worried about her safety at the international airport, and requested a brief report on the latest situation there. The case was immediately assigned to our security advisor and regional analyst who after an extensive search of local and regional sources were able to ascertain that Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu had been unaffected by the violence thus far and was operating as usual.

The Nepalese authorities had established a special shuttle service to escort and assist arriving and departing passengers for the duration of the curfew in the capital. The information was forwarded to the member within a few hours, and was followed by a telephone call from our Customer Services Manager, who assured him that red24 would continue to monitor the situation in Nepal.

As the situation in Kathmandu began to worsen over the next few hours, with more clashes and fatalities being reported, the member was once again contacted and briefed on the latest situation. We were informed that his daughter had managed to catch an earlier flight and was now safely in Bangkok.

The member was assured that red24 would monitor the situation in Bangkok and other destinations his daughter was planning to visit and would contact him immediately if any developments arose which might impact on her safety.

The member was most impressed at the level of personal care red24 had provided, and mentioned that his daughter would forward her travel itinerary.
