Safety First

At Planet Wise we believe that the best way to stay safe whilst travelling is by learning how to recognise the signs of a potentially dangerous situation, before it happens. Retaining control, reacting sensibly, diffusing trouble and listening to your instincts are all sure-fire ways of ensuring that you remain safe, and that your travel experience is memorable for all the right reasons!

To this end, Planet Wise has teamed up with fire brigades around the country.

An officer or one of our staff conducts an excellent session on what to look for when checking into a hotel or hostel. This is then complemented with an interactive session on the types of fire you may encounter, how to react and, most importantly how to get out of a burning building. Don't worry though it's not really on fire.

Hampshire Fire Brigade says:

"We are delighted to have direct input into the training of these 'adventurers'. We hope that the training and instruction we give is of benefit both on their travels and when the return home. We look forward to continued links with Planet Wise"
- David Askew, Hampshire Fire Brigade

Police make you think

here?

What can happen

So ask yourself…

  • Is it better to have a ground floor room or one on the second floor?
  • You've only just met but he asks you to help carry his bags onto the ferry - what do you do?
  • The boat doesn't have life jackets but it's the only way across the river - do you take the trip?
  • How is it best to carry your rucksack across a wooden bridge on the Inca trail?
  • Which side of the path should you walk on when approached by Yaks in Nepal?
  • How do you get rid of touts that bug you all day long?
  • How do you avoid gem scams and credit card problems?
  • Do you know the correct way to escape a burning building?

We'll also help you…

  • Get streetwise and understanding what's going on around you.
  • Dress in a way that makes you less likely to stand out in a crowd.
  • Understand what acceptable behaviour is, and why it changes from place to place, culture to culture, and from time to time.
  • How and where to carry your money and other valuable documents. Try getting another passport with no identification.
  • Understand and avoid the dangers associated with alcohol and drugs.
  • Make quick and realistic judgements about the people you meet.
  • Understand officials, what they require, and how not to antagonise them.
  • Keep in touch with people at home and make sure other people know where you are going to be at any given time.

"To have the fire brigade and the police force involved with the course was a big surprise - but then again it's meant to be. I've been told I can't say what actually happens but in both cases its great fun and extremely useful"
