Accommodation

Hostels/Hotels

  • In hotels look for a price list of each room and its bed configuration, bath facilities, and price for one person or two. A room with a double bed and shower is often cheaper than a room with twins and a bath. Anywhere in Europe, beat the high cost of hotels by staying in rooms in private homes.
  • Hostels are available in every larger city. They provide "no frills" accommodations in clean same sex dormitories, normally sleeping between 4-20 in bunk beds. Many hostels also have rooms set aside for couples and families. Most guests are under 30, although some are older and families are gaining in numbers. Sheets and blankets are often included, although it is advisable to have your own. A double sheet sown together to make a sleep sheet is good. Toilets and showers are shared and sometimes a kitchen is available.
  • Keep your possessions tidy in any dorm room, that makes them safer and allows you to get out quickly should you need to.

Campsites

  • Use them they are dirt-cheap!
  • Never leave valuables in your tent unattended.
  • Make sure all your possessions are either locked in a vehicle or in the tent with you when you go to sleep.
  • Leave all foodstuffs at least 25m from your tent if camping in an area containing bears!

Security

  • If you can lock your room do so, but who else has a key!
  • If you can, opt for a 1st floor front of building room, it is the safest place to be.
  • Carry a rape alarm with you, with a bit of electrical tape it can be turned into a door alarm.
  • If in dorm rooms, keep your belongings in your pack; never trust anyone in your room.
  • Sleep with your passport, ticket and wallet in your pillowcase.
  • When going to the shower lock your room if you can.
  • If the hostel has a safe and you can trust them, use it.
