Are You Planet Wise?

We can't anticipate every situation you might find yourself in, but a Planet Wise travel safety training course will help prepare you to deal with unexpected and ensure you don't become a headline.

All the following scenarios have happened to us or our friends when we have been travelling. Have a read through and see if you can answer the questions with what YOU would do in a similar situation?

What would you do?

You are in a bar in Puerto Auora in the Galapagos Islands when you notice that the main overhead electricity cables out in the street are smoking. A few moments later they burst into flames and ignite the thatched roof of the bar. What course of action should you take?

You have had to stay the night at Gorak Shep when returning to Lobouche from Kala Patar. In the middle of the night you hear your roommate coughing violently and so go to investigate. What should you be looking for and what is the likely cause of this cough? What should you do?

Your plane has landed, at last, back at Heathrow. Unfortunately you were slightly delayed in Dubai and so have missed your 22:30 coach from the airport back up to Leeds. Do you get a taxi to Golders Green or Victoria in order to intercept it, or do you resign yourself to the fact that you are not going to go home tonight and go and check into a travel lodge until the morning?

You are on an organised trek to Macchu Picchu and you are finding the trekking itinerary exhausting. Do you tell your guide to slow down or do you grin and bear it?

You and your fiancé are travelling down through Utah towards Canyon lands National Park on a two-month long summer road trip in your 1973 Pontiac 6.3 litre V8, when the engine temperature gauge shoots up rapidly and you see water pouring out of the exhaust. You have no mobile phone reception and it is approaching 2pm. In the car you have a multi tool and an adjustable spanner. What next?

You and a friend are walking through the departure lounge at Bangkok airport when a passing sniffer dog sits down in front of you and waits for its handler to arrive on the scene. What should you do?

When rafting the Bhote Khosi river you fall out of the raft just before the "frog in a blender" rapid. Should you try to stand up and walk to the riverbank?

You arrive at the border crossing between India and Nepal at 11:30pm in order to catch the next bus to Kathmandu, which you have pre-booked and have been assured, will be waiting for you. It is raining heavily and the border post is deserted apart from a group of drunken, gun touting border guards who approach you and offer you "a bed for the night". Do you accept their offer? What should you do?

As part of your inter-railing trip with your boyfriend you have enough money left over to do one journey on the Orient Express. You are in a separate secluded carriage with another couple. As the journey goes on you get talking to them and they offer to buy you and your partner a drink. Should you accept their hospitality?

You are in a bus travelling between Quito and Tena. On a steep downhill section of dirt road you notice that the speed of the bus is increasing dramatically. A corner is looming up ahead. What should you do?

When travelling by train from Mysore down to Bangalore the train pulls into a station and you spy a little lad on the platform selling omelettes from a greasy, blackened pan on an old primus stove. You are starving and haven't eaten since breakfast time. Should you buy an omelette?

You are on your tour bus, with your fellow trekkers and guide, en route from Manali to the Spiti Valley, where you are to undertake a seven-day trek. Your guide hands you two pills and in broken English says that they are for the altitude. Do you trust his knowledge and judgement and take the pills or do you politely refuse?

You are driving up the Stuart Highway in late January when you see a huge cloud of dust up ahead. Do you carry on driving or do you pull over to one side and stop?

When you and your travelling partner are leaving the train station in Cuzco you slip on the wet steps that lead out into the street and twist your knee badly. Would you both have the knowledge to know what to do next, both medically and logistically?

You get pulled over by a police patrol car in a quiet village on the outskirts of Marseille. The policeman informs you that you have been speeding and says that you must be fined on the spot. You say that you have no money, but the officer sees your wallet on the dashboard and goes to grab it. Should you resist him?

You happen to be in Goa at the time of the full moon and you know there will be a great party on the beach that evening. You have been ill in the preceding days with a high fever and diarrhoea. When discussing your illness with a fellow traveller in the hostel he suggests that you take a couple of "pills" that he has in his pocket to help you through the party. Should your alarm bells be ringing at this point?

You have just arrived in Cairns and want to do some diving out on the reef. You go into town to find an outfit that can help you fulfil this dream. What sort of things should you be looking for in a company of this nature so that you have an enjoyable and safe trip?

You have been away in the jungles of Belize helping out on a community project for the past three months and have noticed a long black line under your skin on you left shoulder. What course of action should you take?

You have just passed through the border into Canada en route to Vancouver when you see in your rear view mirror the blue flashing lights of a police patrol car who is pulling you over. The police officer says that your car was reported stolen from Vancouver three months ago. Alarm bells start ringing as you realise that the great 'value for money' car you bought for $600 in LA with no documents may not be as kosha as you first thought. What next?

You have at last, after many years of dreaming, finally reached the Galapagos Islands on you honeymoon. When on Isla Baltra you find a really cute, furry, baby sea lion who appears to be lost and wants you to be its friend. Should you befriend it?
