Female Security

  • Leave an itinerary of your plans with family and keep them informed of changes.
  • If you are single wear a wedding ring to avoid hassle.
  • Never get completely plastered.
  • Book transport so that you arrive at your destination at a safe time.
  • Always sit in an aisle seat when travelling so you can move if you feel uncomfortable or intimidated.
  • Pre-book your first night's accommodation at each destination.
  • Sign in with only your initial to keep gender vague.
  • Never stay in a ground floor room.
  • Memorize your hotel/hostel name.
  • Never bring anyone back to your room or make your accommodation known.
  • Don't brag about being alone.
  • While getting your bearings sit next to older women, middle-aged couples, mums and kids. Do as you would at home. Make friends with a female traveller first, together you can talk to the locals and meet men!
  • Dress appropriately and abide by local culture.
  • Walk with a sense of purpose and disguise maps with a book or newspaper.
  • Carry a rape alarm by day and use to secure your bedroom door at night.
  • Always listen to your instinct.
  • If you are attacked, an embassy or 5 star hotel can advise on where to go for help.
