- Use a reputable company and make sure it's booked in advance
- Check the vehicle over before taking charge of it. If necessary
write on the form the damage you can see. Digital photos can help
you in the event of a dispute
- Get a complete package that includes uninsured motorists, insurance,
additional drivers and the first tank of petrol.
- Check local regulations, you may need an international driving
licence.
- Make sure you pay any parking or speeding fines, as the hire
company will charge these to your credit card, often with added
costs. You may also have trouble with re-entry to countries such
as America.
Taxis
- Make sure they are registered and hold documentation.
- Know the rough direction and distance of your journey.
- Ensure you agree on a price before you get in.
- If the Taxi has a meter make sure it is used
Buses/Trains
- Sit in an aisle seat, if you feel uncomfortable or intimidated
you can move easily.
- In some countries, overnight sleepers are lockd to protect the
passengers. Great, except in the event of a crash
- Where possible keep your luggage with you.
- Make sure you have enough supplies with you, i.e. Food, drink.
- Bring a book for long journeys
- Use the toilet at every opportunity.
- Seriously look at the roadworthiness of the bus, does it look
safe?
